Ode to Landon

My hastily conjured tribute to newly crowned American hero Landon Donovan, who struck a decisive 91st-minute blow in 2010 Barbary Wars rematch to send the USA into the knockout stages.

To the tune of Frederick Weatherly‘s “Danny Boy” (actually it’s that of Irish anthem “Londonderry Air“):

Donny Boy

Oh Donny boy, your team, your team is ailing
From man to man, and across Pretoria’s grass
The summer’s come, and all your hopes are fading
T’is you, T’is you must go on til the last.

So come ye forth when Algeria’s caught befuddled
Big Jozy plays the cross in swift and low
T’is you are there when Dempsey’s shot is fumbled
Oh Donny boy, oh Donny boy, they love you so.

After ye score, Algerians lay a-cryin’
While England hails Jermain’s game winner
Ye shed a tear on camera; she’s watching
Ye give a smile and say “Hi Bianca” there for her.

And now we hear the fans fawning for thee
Even as Ghana awaits with great belief
For ye have led your team out of the valley
And USA shall cheer until they come to grief.
